Rakbar Khan was a dairy farmer from Haryana’s Mewat district. On 21st July, cow vigilantes suspected and later allege him of cow smuggling. The crowd suddenly turned into mob and mob doesn’t reason. They killed him and left the family of 8 in despair. He was the only breadwinner for the family.
On 20th August, The Supreme Court sought explanation from Rajasthan state government over the alleged lynching of Rakbar Khan in Alwar.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked the Principal Secretary of the Home department of the state government to file an affidavit giving details of the action taken in the lynching case. The court further said that the affidavit must deal with all aspects
Notably, the bench was hearing a contempt plea filed by Tushar Gandhi and Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala seeking contempt action against the Rajasthan government in the mob lynching case at Alwar.
They had alleged that incidents of mob lynching and vigilantism were taking place despite the apex court verdict in this regard.
Our Opinion
This is not the only case of mob lynching in recent times. According to an investigation carried out by the Indian Express, in 9 states 27 such lynching had taken place since last year. Their finding finds a pattern. Proximity or distance of police from the scene of the crime doesn’t make a difference. In the 27 killings, the nearest station was 2-20 km from the spot — on an average, within 10 km. Yet, police were unable to reach in time. In the handful of cases that they did, they were heavily outnumbered.
This suggest that there is no black or white on the canvas. There is a gray patch and that patch is huge. It will take time to undo the damage done. Let’s see how the things fold in the future.
