Johnson & Johnson fined $8 billion for hiding breast growing side effect in males of a drug

0

Johnson & Johnson must pay $8 billion in punitive damages to a man who previously won $680,000 over his claims that it failed to warn that young men using its antipsychotic drug Risperdal could grow breasts, a Philadelphia jury said on Tuesday.

J&J said the award was grossly disproportionate with the initial compensatory award in this case, and the company is confident it will be overturned. It added that the jury in the case had not been allowed to hear evidence of Risperdal’s benefits.

Plaintiffs claim that J&J failed to warn of the risk of gynecomastia, the development of enlarged breasts in males, associated with Risperdal, which they say the company marketed for unapproved uses with children.

In his lawsuit, Murray, now 26, alleged that he developed breasts after his doctors began prescribing him Risperdal off-label in 2003 after a psychologist diagnosed him with autism spectrum disorder. Doctors are allowed to prescribe medicines as they see fit, while companies are only allowed to promote their drugs for approved uses.

A jury in 2015 awarded Murray $1.75 million after finding J&J was negligent in failing to warn of the risk of gynecomastia. A state appeals court upheld the verdict in February 2018 but reduced it to $680,000.

Trump backs out on his offer of mediating between India and Pakistan, calls the Kashmir issue “bilateral”

After repeatedly offering to help India and Pakistan find a common ground on the Kashmir issue, Trump has backed out on his offer, calling it a “bilateral issue”.

Trump had offered to mediate the issue on three different occasions in the past month. On all these occasions, the official US government office was in the favour of a bilateral settlement between the countries. Seems like the president and his office are on the same page again.

India has maintained its stance and has called the Kashmir issue as bilateral and scrapping of the article 370 an internal affair. Donald Trump had earlier claimed that India had asked for his help on the burning matter at hand. But the Indian government refuted the claim. Later the president’s office set the matter straight when it stated that the president had offered his help, India had not asked for it.

Prime minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Trump in Biarritz, France on the side lines of the G7 summit. Even though India is not a part of the G7, the Indian premier was personally invited by the French President Emmanuel Macron to attend the summit.

After landing, Modi had his first bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Modi is also expected to take a walk and have conversation with the French President. Modi also addressed a session on biodiversity on the side lines of the prestigious summit. He highlighted India’s efforts towards reducing plastic, conserving water , harnessing solar energy and protecting flora and fauna for sustainable future.

Trump talks to Modi and Imran; says tough situations, great conversations

On Sunday US President Donald Trump spoke with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, with the aim of reducing the escalated tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries.
On Tuesday morning, Trump took to Twitter to post about the call where he said that he had talked to the premiers about “trade, strategic partnerships” and that he has also urged the two countries to work our their differences.

The relations between the two neighbors had always been sour. But the latest step taken by the Indian government to revoke article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been severely criticized by Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan has cut all trade and transport ties with India.

The White House issued a statement on the phone call to the Indian premier. It said: “The two leaders further discussed how they will continue to strengthen US-India economic ties through increased trade, and they look forward to meeting again soon.”

On Trump’s call to Imran Khan, the White House said that the call was to “discuss the need to reduce tensions and moderate rhetoric” with India over Kashmir.

Trump blames teleprompter for his ‘airport’ debacle

0

President Donald Trump blamed a faulty teleprompter for his claim during remarks he made at a July 4th event that the Continental Army “took over the airports” during the Revolutionary War. He was severely mocked for the flub as aeroplane was invented in 1903.

“The teleprompter went out,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

“It just went out – it went kaput.”

Donald Trump

During his Independence Day speech paying tribute to the military, Trump sowed confusion when he began talking about air defenses during the American Revolution, which took place more than a century before the invention of the airplane.

“Our Army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports,” Trump said of the fighting force created by the Continental Congress in 1775.

Trump didn’t even acknowledge the mistake, instead he boasted about his memory. Trump said it wasn’t pleasant to see the scrolling stop as he was delivering his highly anticipated speech.

“That’s not a good feeling when you’re standing in front of millions and millions of people,” he said. “I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter.”

Still, he said his memory of the speech otherwise served him well. “I knew the speech very well so I was able to do it without a teleprompter,” he said. “And it was actually hard to look at anyway because of the rain.”

Here is Trump’s full riff on the American Revolution military:

“In June of 1775, the Continental Congress created a unified Army out of the Revolutionary Forces encamped around Boston and New York, and named after the great George Washington, commander in chief. The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware and seized victory from Cornwallis of Yorktown.

“Our Army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do, and at Fort McHenry, under the rocket’s red glare it had nothing but victory. And when dawn came, their star-spangled banner waved defiant.”

Bomb blast in Kabul after US-Taliban talk

The misery doesn’t seem to cease piling up for Afghanistan. A powerful car bomb blast left dozens of people wounded in Kabul. Gunmen also battled special forces in an area housing military and government buildings.

The rush-hour explosion sent a plume of smoke into the air above the Puli Mahmood Khan neighbourhood of the Afghan capital and shook buildings up to two kilometres (1.2 miles) away. Gunshots after the blast were also reported by an AFP reporter.

Health ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayar tweeted that 65 wounded people, including nine children, had been taken to hospital. He warned that casualties could rise. The area was quickly blocked off by Afghan forces and ambulances, with helicopter gunships seen overhead as firing continued.

Police said they do not yet know the target. The nearby “Green Zone” diplomatic area was briefly put on lockdown, but later opened again.

The explosion came two days after the Taliban and the US began their seventh round of talks in Qatar as Washington eyes a breakthrough before Afghanistan’s September presidential election. The negotiations have so far centred on four issues – counter-terrorism, the foreign troop presence, an intra-Afghan dialogue and a permanent ceasefire.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but both the Taliban and the so-called Islamic State group are active in Kabul.

The heavily-secured neighbourhood is home to some military and government buildings, including one shared by Afghanistan’s intelligence agency and defence ministry, as well as the Afghan Football Federation and Cricket Board.
