The laureate she has brought for the country is a mark for every citizen. Whereas, the boys could only manage to secure two bronze medals, Navjot Kaur, out of all the odds, defeated, Japans Miya Imai by 9-1 adding 8th medal in India’s count.
Collecting all the appraisal and praises, the 27 year old wrestler landed at the Amritsar airport, where she found no Govt officials coming to receive her, on which she said that “Of course it feels to a player at such moments. When any player achieves something big in Haryana, he or she is given a grand welcome, but this does not happen in Punjab.’ She also envisaged to be offered the post of DSP in Punjab Police as offered to the Indian Women Cricket Team Captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Then she headed to the Golden Temple to pay obeisance. She was welcomed vigorously in her village where SGPC ( Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) honoured her with a Siropa (robe of honour ) and was announced to give her 1 lakh Rs. Prize.
Navjot expresses her dreadful situation After injuring her waist in 2014, Navjot was out of the game for two years. For her treatment, her father took loans from the banks and indebted himself with an amount of 13 lakh rupees. Navjeet Kaur, 32, her elder sister, who is a former wrestler, left the sport because of a series of injuries. “My father bore the entire expense of her treatment and we also borrowed money. No one came to our help then,” says Navjeet. Their younger brother, Yuvraj, 23, an aspiring cricketer , gave up his dream and started helping his father in the farms so that they can support Navjot.
Navjot clearly stated that she doesn’t intend of money, but a secured job, so that she can help her indebted father. She doesn’t wants the situation of girls to be perennial in the field of sports and expects a better help from the government. She also stated “Not many girls are joining sports in Punjab. I am the only girl from Punjab in the national-level wrestling camp. Our girls should come forward and bring laurels for the state.”Maybe the support from Government can contribute as a praise and prowess for other girls.
