PV Sindhu became the first Indian badminton star to win gold at the BWF World Championships. She defeated her familiar for Nozumi Okuhara to win the coveted medal in a one sided final.

The 24 year old shuttler finished the final in just 38 minutes. The scores of the final were 21-7,21-7.

On her way to success, Sindhu first defeated former World number 1 Tai Tzu Ying in the quarters and then locked horns with China’s Chen Yu Fei in the semis held on 24 August.

It is Sindhu’s first gold medal at an international level. In the 2017 Championship, she won the silver medal after losing to Okuhara. This time, history repeated itself, but with a twist. The world number 5 crushed the world number 3 in this final.

After winning the gold, Sindhu dedicated it to her mother. She said-“I dedicate this medal to my mother. It’s her birthday today”. She also thanked her coach Pullela Gopichand and her support staff for their contribution in her incredible win.

Sindhu will now head into the Tokyo Olympics as the reigning world champion.
